How to Choose the Right Driveway Gate
2 min read
Swing or slide?
- Swing gates are the classic choice for most NJ driveways. Cheaper and simpler.
- Slide gates work when driveway slope or snow buildup would block a swing path. They need more side clearance.
Single or bi-parting?
For openings wider than 14 feet we recommend bi-parting (double swing). It cuts the leaf length in half, reducing wind load and operator stress.
Material
- Wrought iron for ornamental, traditional homes.
- Aluminum for coastal or low-maintenance preference.
- Steel tube with aluminum cladding for the best of both.
Operator tier
- Residential duty (LiftMaster LA400): good for up to 10 cycles per day.
- Medium duty (LiftMaster LA500): 25 plus cycles.
- Commercial duty: unlimited cycles, required for any commercial install.
Access control
Keypad, remote, and smartphone (myQ) are standard. We also add Bluetooth key fobs for employee access and a hardwired intercom for visitors.
Safety (UL 325)
Every automated gate in NJ must have:
- Reversing photo eyes at minimum
- Warning signage
- A manual release for power loss
We add safety edges on commercial gates as an extra layer.
Ballpark pricing
- Simple residential swing gate with automation: $7,500 - $12,000
- Ornamental bi-parting wrought iron with automation: $15,000 - $28,000
- Commercial slide gate with access control: $18,000 - $45,000
What to ask your installer
Shop drawings, operator model, warranty on gate and operator (separately), and whether they service what they install. A cheap gate with a bargain operator costs more in 5 years than a quality install.
