NJ Pool Fence Requirements: What You Need to Know
The rule in one sentence
Every residential inground or above-ground pool in NJ must be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches tall with self-closing, self-latching gates.
Height
48 inches minimum measured from grade to the top of the fence. Some towns require 54 inches, confirm with your local building department.
Openings
- No gap under the fence greater than 2 inches.
- Picket spacing such that a 4 inch sphere cannot pass through.
- No climbable horizontal members within 45 inches of grade.
Gates
- Must swing outward away from the pool.
- Self-closing hinges.
- Self-latching latch at 54 inches above grade or higher (inside release only).
- Keyed or combination lock encouraged for unattended pools.
Approved materials
Powder-coated aluminum is the gold standard. Other options include ornamental steel, vinyl, and wood (vinyl and wood are more maintenance). Chain link is almost always rejected today.
Inspection checklist
- Measured height of fence at every panel.
- 4 inch sphere test.
- Gate self-close release test from full open.
- Latch height verification.
- No climbable features test.
